Aerospace welder.
AWS D17.1 + NDT-heavy. Clean shops, top wages, defense-driven demand.
Aerospace welding pays more than structural or fabrication for one reason: the consequences. Every weld is X-rayed, every cert is current, every welder has a personal stamp. The standard is AWS D17.1 for fusion welding and AWS D17.2 for resistance welding. Most shops require both plus a year of supervised experience on the actual parts.
Pay is $35–$70/hr depending on certification depth, security clearance, and shop. Lockheed, Boeing, Northrop, Raytheon, GE Aerospace, and the SpaceX/Blue Origin/Rocket Lab tier are the prime contractors. Below them are the Tier 1 fabs in Wichita (Spirit AeroSystems), Fort Worth (Lockheed), and El Segundo / Long Beach (Boeing, SpaceX).
Defense spending and reshoring of strategic supply chains are driving aggressive hiring. A welder with a current D17.1 and a Secret clearance can write their own ticket. The work is clean (climate-controlled shops, no field weather), the hours are predictable, and the wages compound with cert renewals.
