Mobile rig welder.
Your truck, your hours. Ranch, oilfield, agricultural, fleet repair.
Mobile rig welding is the closest thing to running your own welding business with no overhead beyond your truck. You haul a Lincoln SA-200, a SA-300, or a Miller Big Blue 400 mounted in a flatbed or service body, and you go wherever the work is — ranches, oilfields, construction sites, fleet yards, marine.
The economics are different from shop work. You charge by the hour ($95–$175 typical, $200+ in remote oilfield) plus mileage and consumables. A 50-hour week at $125/hr is $6,250 gross. Minus fuel, rod, gas, and truck maintenance, you typically clear 65–75% net.
The catch: insurance is real ($3,500–$6,000/yr for liability + commercial auto), the truck is a $50–$100k capital cost, and you have to generate your own work. WeldRunners is a directory + job board for exactly this — list your mobile rig, get found by ranchers, ops, and shops that don't want to ship a job to your shop.
