Refinery welder.
ASME IX + turnaround crews. Gulf Coast, Midwest, West Coast.
Refinery welding is the heaviest concentration of code-stamped pressure work in the U.S. The standard is ASME Section IX for welder qualifications, with API 570 for in-service piping. Most refinery hiring is contract-based through turnaround crews — 30 to 90 day shutdowns where a refinery brings in 200–800 welders for major maintenance.
The largest U.S. refinery clusters are the Gulf Coast (Houston, Beaumont, Lake Charles, Baton Rouge — about 50% of U.S. refining capacity), the Midwest (Whiting IN, Joliet IL, Detroit MI, Toledo OH), and the West Coast (Bay Area, LA Basin, Anacortes WA). Per-diem on turnarounds is standard, typically $130–$200/day plus hotel.
The work is intense: 12-hour shifts, 6 days a week, in heat or cold, in confined spaces and at heights. The pay matches: journeyman rates of $42–$58/hr base, time-and-a-half over 40, double time over 60. A 90-day turnaround can clear $40–$60k for a hard worker.
