Plasma, waterjet, or laser?

Plasma: fastest, cheapest, good through 2 inch plate. Waterjet: no heat, any material, tight tolerances, slower. Laser: thin sheet, very tight tolerances, but pricey. Tell the shop what you're cutting and what tolerance you need; they'll pick.

Can I get a setup-free price?

Most CNC shops will quote a per-piece price after a small setup fee. For runs over a few dozen the setup cost gets amortized out. For one-offs, the setup can dwarf the part cost.

What you're getting

When you need fifty of the same shape cut from quarter-inch plate, you want a CNC shop. Plasma is fastest and most economical for steel. Waterjet handles stainless, aluminum, and anything heat-sensitive. Laser is best for thin sheet (under 1/2 inch) with tight tolerances. Send the shop a DXF or DWG and a material spec.
